The first few months
The first few months after breast cancer treatment is over can be a confusing time.
Some people find that their emotions only really hit them when treatment is over and they have time to reflect on what’s happened. Some women say they feel lost without the routine of breast cancer treatment. Others say they feel a sense of ‘limbo’, wondering how to move on. For many people these feelings ease with time.
While it’s normal to want to return to health after months of treatment, your body may need more time to recuperate. It can take time to get over the effects of cancer treatment. Each person’s schedule is different, so it is important to give yourself and your body time to recover from the physical and emotional impact of treatment.
It’s likely that friends and family will be excited about having you back in their lives and may not be prepared for you to still have days when you don’t feel so positive. Tell those close to you how you feel and let them know if you’re having a bad day.
Alternatively, you may wish to speak to a woman who has been through a similar experience.

As time goes by
With time, it’s likely that you will find yourself thinking less about your breast cancer as the side effects of treatment pass and you return to the things that are important to you.
However, you may find that there are triggers that remind you of your breast cancer and make you feel nervous or upset. Passing the hospital where you were treated, finding out that someone who was treated at the same time as you has developed breast cancer again, or hearing a story about breast cancer in the media can bring back painful memories.
Be prepared to have bad days, even some time after treatment is over. Certain dates may also be more difficult such as the anniversary of diagnosis or the first mammogram after treatment. Let those close to you know if there are times when you need more support.
