Nurses and community health workers in rural, regional and remote Australia are encouraged to apply for scholarships to expand their skills in caring for local women with breast cancer.

The scholarships are funded by the Polo Ralph Lauren Pink Pony Campaign and made available to recipients across Australia through a collaboration between Polo Ralph Lauren and National Breast and Ovarian Cancer Centre (NBOCC)*.

“The scholarships allow nurses and community health workers to undertake further study or to attend conferences where they can share experiences with colleagues and learn about the latest advances in breast cancer treatment and care,” said Dr Helen Zorbas, CEO National Breast and Ovarian Cancer Centre*.

The scholarships cover expenses such as course or conference registration fees, textbooks, travel and accommodation.

All nurses and community health workers based in Tasmania, Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory are eligible to apply for the scholarships.

In other states, only nurses and community health workers employed in areas other than capital cities or major metropolitan centres are eligible to apply.

Nurses and community health workers providing care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women are encouraged to apply.

Nurses and community health workers interested in applying for a scholarship should visit www.nbocc.org.au/pinkpony/ or contact National Breast and Ovarian Cancer Centre* on 02 9357 9414. Previous scholarship applicants or recipients will be considered.

Applications close on Monday 25 October 2010.

The Polo Ralph Lauren Pink Pony Campaign is an international initiative which aims to assist women with breast cancer in medically underserved communities.

National Breast and Ovarian Cancer Centre* is funded by the Australian Government and works with consumers, health professionals, cancer organisations, researchers and governments to improve care and cancer control in breast and ovarian cancer.
