Choosing a drug or a combination of drugs for pain depends on the type and severity of pain. If one drug doesn’t effectively help a particular pain, many other drugs or combinations of drugs can be used to give provide pain relief.

It might take time, in consultation with a doctor, to establish the drug or drug combination that is right for each woman.

While most pain relief drugs have some side effects, they are generally not serious. Not everyone experiences side effects. If side effects do occur, they can be reduced by other treatments (for example using other drugs to treat side effects) or by changing to a different medication.

A doctor can advise about any side effects to look for, and what to do if side effects occur. A pharmacist can also provide a drug information printout with information about side effects.
