A number of treatments for ovarian cancer can cause menopause.
  • Surgery to remove both ovaries results in a permanent menopause for pre-menopausal women. Removing only one ovary will not cause menopause, provided that the other ovary continues to function normally.
  • Many different chemotherapy drugs are used in the treatment of ovarian cancer. If only one ovary has been removed by surgery, chemotherapy drugs can damage the remaining ovary, In pre-menopausal women this will bring on menopause and can also affect fertility. Not all chemotherapy drugs cause menopausal symptoms. Chemotherapy treatments change all the time – and so too does the risk of early menopause.
